Canton SBDC Client Success: Ward Lumber Transitions Ownership to Employees
With assistance from the SUNY Canton Small Business Development Center (SBDC), the employees of Ward Lumber have made history by purchasing the 130-year-old business as a worker-owned cooperative. The transaction marks the first employee ownership transition of its kind in the North Country region of New York State.
The lumber products and hardware store, which has locations in Jay and Malone, NY, and employs 52 local people, has been in Jay Ward’s family for four generations. Ward, who will continue his leadership role as the company’s chief executive officer, completed a contract with his employee team, making Ward Lumber the largest worker-owned cooperative in the region.

This information helps a business determine how they are going to stand out and succeed. Just because other businesses exist who are selling the same or similar product/service does not mean that more business is not required in that area. Do your homework before biz buy
"There are many benefits to buying a business. If the business has been operating for several years, you are aware of the risks associated with it, and so is your lending agency. Accounts are available outlining the sales and expenses of the business throughout its history. As the seller, you will be required to provide the last three years of tax information to the buyer and lender. For this reason, it’s a good idea to sell your business when it is still profitable; if you are not making a profit when you sell, your perceived “value” of the business’s goodwill is zero, and your selling price will be based on tangible assets."
