SBDC at Stony Brook University Joins SATOP
The SBDC at Stony Brook is pleased to announce their partnership with the Space Alliance Technology Outreach Program (SATOP), to help market the program to small businesses in Suffolk County.

Funded by a grant from NASA, SATOP offers 40 hours of FREE engineering assistance to help small businesses overcome technical challenges. The goal of SATOP is to help speed the transfer of technical knowledge from the U.S. Space Industry to small businesses, and promote economic development. According to a recent study, SATOP has helped to infuse more than $134 million into the national economy, and helped to create or retain 219 jobs during the last fiscal year (2003 study conducted by Economic & Policy Resources, Williston, VT.)

“We are excited to welcome SBDC at Stony Brook to the SATOP family in New York,” said Beth Bornick, Director of the NY SATOP Center. “Their presence will give us greater visibility, and allow more small businesses the opportunity to benefit from SATOP’s free service.”

SATOP provides assistance to businesses mainly addressing challenges in mechanical, electrical, materials, and manufacturing engineering. Last year SATOP improved the molding process for plastic eyeglass lenses, researched a better material for the neck of a new musical instrument, recommended additives to slow freezing and evaporation of cleaning fluid, and solved many other technical challenges.

Since SATOP was founded in 1995, more than 1,400 requests have been processed, and more than 900 free resolutions were provided to small businesses. Any small business (up to 500 employees) facing a technical or production challenge may complete a Request for Technical Assistance (RTA)
by going to the SBDC at Stony Brook Web site at www.stonybrook.edu/smallbusiness, click on “Related Links”, and the SATOP link can be found under “Government”. Upon completion of the RTA, the SBDC at Stony Brook will direct the request to one of the four SATOP centers in Florida, Texas, New Mexico or New York.

The SBDC at Stony Brook offers assistance to existing and emerging small businesses through cost free individual counseling in the areas of marketing, financial projections, business plans and management. In addition, a full workshop schedule provides additional tools for success.

Computer networking links the Stony Brook SBDC with other SBDC centers throughout New York State. For additional information or to make an appointment with a Business Advisor, please call (631) 632-9070.

The NYS SBDC is partially funded by the US Small Business Administration.
